Keep Your Laptop Safe

Recent Events forced me to write this post. Some of my close friends just got there laptop stolen. Now i think i should have told them to put some precautionary software, Well they have lost it but now i don't want anyone else to loose any mobile phone or laptop.
So its better to prepare yourself .
To keep ur laptop safe, i recommend the following Soft-wares:
  • Prey ( lets you keep track of your laptop, phone and tablet whenever stolen or missing ): This the main Tracking software is your laptop got stolen or missing. u can see its homepage and get more info about it.
  • TrueCrypt (Free open-source disk encryption software) : Use this software to encrypt ur important data so even if u lost your hard-disk or laptop no one can access ur personal data (sensitive data for examples passwords, projects etc.).
  • Setup a Key-logger on your device : u can Google and found a good free key-logger for yourself that even upload logs online or mail them to ur email id.
  • Dropbox (offers cloud storage and  file synchronization) :MUST INSTALL (on both Mobiles and PCs) :Every one should at least install Dropbox and put ur very important data on it. there are 2 reason to have Dropbox on ur pc or laptop :
                     1. It works as a tracker: put Dropbox at ur start-up software if ur computer is connected to internet it will send the IP address at dropbox site and so u can track the location from the ip.
see the following pic for a example of IP tracking:
                    2. It works as a reliable online backup : u can upload ur important data like project certificates and other data u want to keep safe (don't put movies etc. u have limited space to backup). U can access that data anywhere from any device (Mobile , Tab or PCs). by the way if u have android mobile u can get extra space. Google it to find out have u can have more Dropbox space

 Some more points :-
  • Keep doors and windows locked.Do not advertise the presence of computer equipment by leaving it on view through windows and glass doors.
  • Avoid bags that look like laptop bags, for example a bag with a manufacturer’s logo on it.
  • If you have either stored passwords in a document on your PC or laptop, or have ever ticked the ‘remember this password’ box on a website, change any passwords as soon as possible after the theft or loss.
  • Notify the Police and obtain a crime or loss reference number for tracking and insurance purposes.
  • Make a note of computer serial numbers to enable reporting if stolen. Be sure to write down the manufacturer, model and serial number of your laptop and file this information. It is useful to law enforcement in their efforts to recover property.
  • Register your computer equipment on the Immobilise National Property Register. If it gets recovered by the police after being lost or stolen, there is a better chance of it being reunited with the rightful owner.
  • Consider setting up a boot password so that unauthorised users cannot start the computer. However, we recommend this only if you are absolutely certain that you will remember your boot password, otherwise your computer will be rendered unusable.
